SP4 Ken Bowen with portable x-ray equipment.  From an email message Ken wrote:

That was "state of the art" for a field portable x-ray machine in 1967.  Most everyday someone went to the wards to do chest x-rays. Until they completed the cover over the walkways it could get dicey. The lab guys had it even worse because they went more often. In the monsoon season we were soaked. So were the machines by the time we got to the wards. Those machines pumped up the kilovolts! We were lucky we didn't get electrocuted. It was rather primitive.   Remember the 24th was "Semi-mobile" and in theory we could pack up and move. We had the wheel around portable x-ray machines and also a coffin style (100 ma) knock down machine too. We were also hand developing the films. The chemicals, heat and wet mess made the dark room rather nasty.  It was often more art than science to get good pictures.

By December '67 things got significantly better. The addition on one end of our Quonset Hut was finished. We added another diagnostic room, the automatic film processor and a new dark room. A big help was when Long Binh Post got reliable power and we switched from our generators. We "midnight requisitioned" some asphalt tile and laid the floor over the rough concrete. That really improved things too. What memories.....
