Hello to all !! Don Barnett just read your entry. Good to see that you are doing Ok. First and last time I met you was when I was coming out of the elevator at the hotel in D.C. For some reason I just knew it was you !!. Some might not realize the work you and Jody Foss and others had done to make the 1st reunion possible. I know I told you before but again THANKS for initiative for getting the 1st reunion going. Sure would have like to seen you in San Antonio. Take care. Happy New Year to all. Mel

I was at the 24th Evac from: Aug'66-'67
Association: Nurse
For those of you who might remember--Marcia Spencer (Jackson at the 24th) died on 14 Dec. She served 1967-68. I believe Marcia made Cpt. during her tour. She had a special place in her heart for the 24th Evac and her time there. She made it to the first reunion in DC. Her beloved "BOONIE" hat was on display at her funeral. Marcia's family said she did not talk about her time in VN. I guess because we both shared that experience --she would discuss some of her feelings more openly. Rest In Peace Marcia.

Don Barnett <dbarnett@thkassoc.com>
My last name while in Vietnam was: Barnett
Lakewood, CO USA
I was at the 24th Evac from: August, 1968 to Dec. l969
Association: MSC Captain, Detachment Commander/Motor Officer
Greetings to friends from my era at the 24th Evac, our brave patients, and the men who put up with nonsense as Executive Officers Col Irv Jenkins and Col Neal Walls. Maturation was a slow process for this GI.

Congratulations to the crew who built the 2002 reunion at Ft. Sam in San Antonio. I have heard nothing but wonderful reports about the success of that event.

We had a great time too at the l993 reunion at the Mayflower Hotel and "The Wall" in Washington in l993. I have a few historical booklets that Captain Jody Foss (that GREAT ER Nurse) and I put together for the l993 re-union. Contact me for a copy. No Charge.

Would give an arm and a leg to hear once more from Major Sally (I'm a little rowdy) McNally who worked as a gas-passer in the OR. She is a beauty and a great pal. Sally, we just could not find you for the l993 reunion. Katey and I really tried!!!!!!!

Special greetings to the hospital patients who attended the l993 reunion. They made our weekend. Great Americans ALL!!!!!

Also, lost the address for Sp/5 John Mederos, the company clerk (and the brains of the operation) from l968 to l969. He trained Radar O'Reiley. John, send your new address to me, Please.

Special thanks to Eddie Fortmiller and his great wife for running the website. Captain (Doctor) John Baldwin and friends provided the money to host this website, and Eddie is keeping it current.

Ole Barn and family are well and enjoying this Christmas season in mild Colorado.

I miss all of you and regard all of you as the best friends I ever had the opportunity to make.

Special Greetings to the Rosenbergs in Cherry Hills, NJ, my god-son William Donald Reed in the DA's office in Galveston, Keith B. Reed from Dallas, and we lost the address for Juan Santiago who arrived in Wetnam in the fall of l968 and assumed my temporary duties as Mess Officer. However, we didn't poison any staff or patients or guests during my short tour of duty as Mess Officer. Master Sgt. Jerry Baker was (is) the greatest Mess Sgt. in the entire Army. Juan Juan, we'd love to hear from you.

Could go on forever. All the best to everyone. Barny: August 18, 1968 to Date of DEROS 12-11-69 "WE GOTTTTTTTTTTA GET OUTTTTTTTTTA THIS PLACE!!!!!"

Binghamton, NY USA
Association: sister of Kerry Pritchard-nurse from Sept. 1968-1969
Just wanted to let everyone at that base know how proud of all of the nurses, Drs. and military people I am. My sister has never talked about her time there but know in my heart that it had a great emotional effect on her. How could it not? I know it was hell over there and that no one serving there got a thankyou on their return home. Well, you got a big one from me. I am now 58 yrs. old and talk quite a lot about that terrible war with my sons every chance I get. God bless you for your sacrifices and may God bless you this Christmas as I can assure you that the very hairs on each of your heads is known by Him and He loves all of your courage and dedication. May He bring many blessings into your life. If any of you would like to email me about Nam my email is sandbag549@yahoo.com Only serious may connect-no joke and I,m a well experienced listerner. Merry Christmas, My best Mrs. Leslie Lane

Love Ed Fortmiller's website. I want to honor our Commander Col Robert Stanek (1968-69) who was so gracious towards the antics of the crazy surgical tent #3 which did the bulk of the life-saving...Bob was a great surgeon in his own right and now is living in San Antonio...those of you who recognized a gem in your midst..send him a card. The most exciting events at the 24th Evac. was the Ammo Dump explosions. It set off fireworks that made the Fourth of July pale. They strung lights up around the ammo dump to make it look like the Golden Gate Bridge, so we could see Charlie and shoot him before he blew up the ammo dump. I only saw it blown up once during my 18 months there. Once was enough!

Hendersonville, NC USA
I was at the 24th Evac from: Christmas 1969 - March 1971
Association: Corpsman working the Preop/Postop unit 24the Evac
Working in healthcare over the last thirty plus years, I have found many parallels between the present and the past. A few years back when I was working weekends in a skilled nursing facility, I was so upset about the abuse and neglect that I jotted down some rough ideas for a book called Simulus N Flashbacks, 30 Years Looking for Balance. I've finally summoned the strength to actually start writing the stories and the hardest parts are yet to be written. I will finish. Times were difficult in Nam, but yet in some ways it was the best time of my young life. To all the great staff at 24th Evac. Thanks for the Memories!

Centerville, IN USA
I was at the 24th Evac from: 18 Nov 1967 - 9 Jan 1968
Association: friend of patient
24th Evac personnel: I am searching for material concerning PFC Thomas J. Dean, a 9th Div. soldier who suffered spinal cord injury and other devastating wounds on 18 Nov 1967. He was at either the 24th or the 3rd field hospital from then until 9 Jan 1968 when he succumbed. Though I served as a grunt with the Americal Div. in 1967-68, my connection with Tom Dean is from college. I am working on a book about Tom, and have gathered material, some of which identifies the 3rd FH, some the 24th. There is a letter to his parents from nurse, Major Lois A. Johns. Tom had parental connections with then Sec. of State Dean Rusk, and was visited in the hospital on Christmas Eve, 1967 by Gen Westmoreland and Bob Hope. Ambassador Bunker was also a visitor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Welcome home.

Association: Patient
I was a patient at the 24th Evac, Long Binh from 25 Feb '68 until early March '68 when I was evacuated to Japan and later to Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington. I suffered a closed head trauma resulting in a right subtemporal decompression with R frontal and L pariental burr holes. I was in a deep coma and with left hemiparesis(right subtemporal decompression hematoma). I think the medics, nurses and doctors were absolutely the best. They saved my life and I am profoundly grateful.
