I was at the 24th Evac from: Jan to Sep 1967
Association: Nurse (!st Lt. to CPT) worked Preop and Recovery
Arrived in country with the unit;
stayed at Ton Sun Nut air base in civilian clothes where we waited for
jungle fatigues and boots before being shipped out to 36th Evac in Vung Tau
while we waited for construction on the 24th to be complete. I managed to
get my knee scraped crawling under my bunk that first night in country when
I learned what the cry "Incoming" meant. But no purple heart heart
though. That night I learned to make the best of my situation and the best
was yet to come: the many friends I met while in country at the 36th and the
24th. I stayed in the Army to retire as LTC, but not before being
"issued" a husband in Hawaii and 2 daughters both of whom are
finished school and working. Occasionally I tell them of the good times in
Viet Nam like baking pizza in the lab or the rare milk shake made in the
barium blender, playing cards and reading comic books and watching TV on the
Really Big Screen. I even admit to doing a little work, but nothing like my
current job as nursing administrator in a 228 bed skilled facility.

Received gunshot wound, right wrist. Severed ulna nerve. Served in 9TH infantry div. B Co. 39TH INF. Doctors and nurses performed a good job. From there I was sent to Saigon hospital and then received orders for Walter Reed Army Hospital.

I don't know if this was the hospital I was in, but the sentiments would be the same, regardless. You people are my
heroes from the war. What you endured and lived with during your tours is incredible to me. I was in the field with the 199th Infantry for four months and only saw a few
casualties, including a wounded child. In the hospital I saw people with...well, no need to tell you of the horrors.
On April 18 or 19th, 1967, while on patrol in the region near Tan Son Nhut Airbase, Saigon, I was wounded by a
grenade and suffer four shrapnel wounds to my right hand, foot, shoulder, and lower back. I was
medevac'd by chopper to a hospital at the Air Base. I never knew what hospital. I remember arriving; being wheeled in; counting down from 100 to 98 under anesthesia; shouting about sappers inside the perimeter as I was coming too, (I made this up or dreamed it. What perimeter? Who had a perimeter?!!); having two operations; and a back-rub from the most beautiful nurses I have ever seen. (I enjoyed that from an intellectual
perspective--I'm sure). I remember deciding that whatever the extent of my wounds, I was not going to give in to them, so I got up and hopped over to use the latrine. This was good training
because, later, I was sent to the 106th General Hospital in Yokahama, Japan, and had to make it to the mess hall across the road with my foot in a cast. They were tough there. (By the way thanks to the my sister, the Black female officer who pushed me to the messhall when she saw me wheeling myself backwards down the
street in my wheel chair. While there I played chess and watched Gunsmoke in Japanese (and cried a little once because I was tired of being move around so much [Just a short cry. After all I was Infantry]). After that I was flown by way of Alaska and Maine to Irwin Army Hospital at Fort Riley. I returned to duty in September 1967. At Irwin my physical therapist was a Major Strong, a woman. (Thank you ma'am. I recovered fully-just some scars).
Well now that I've bored everyone I will wrap up with the real purpose of this message. I sincerely, do not believe I would have survived had it not been for the field medic, SP4 Firtz Daub, my squad members, my surgeons, nurses, corpsmen & women and all the others. Thank you. Thank you. I don't think my
experience in an way equals yours. In my estimation yours' must have been many times worse. Welcome home.

Was assigned to 24th Evac in 1965 after completing Clinical Specialist Course at Fitzsimons
GH. Arrived In RVN with 24th Evac, aboard USS Gen William Weigle in June 1966. Performed duties as "Field First Sergeant" during construction of Troop Living area and Hospital Complex. Last duty assignment was as Detachment First Sergeant. Departed 24th Evac in Feb (?} 1967 assigned as
NCOIC, 629th Med Det (Renal) at 3rd Fld hosp In Saigon, Returned to CONUS in July 1967. I have enjoyed visiting this fine
WebSite. My "Hat's off" to those who have created it. I hope to be a part of the Reunion in 2002. Will help in what ever way possible to make it happen.
