November 7, through December 29, 2000
I was in Ward 5 which I believe was for headwounds. Having met some of the
nurses through Cindy I was kind of treated like a celebrity. The Doctor that put
my left eye and face
back together was a Lt. Col. Miller, who also flew to Japan
with me and the pilot I was shot down with. My hat goes off
to all the staff on ward 5 who took great care of me.
Sincerely, Ken "Cisco" Gardner

The reunion in 1993 was poignant, meaningful and great fun.
Would love to do it again in '03.
Highly recommend that EVERYBODY obtain a copy of Mary
Reynold's book, "A World of Hurt: Between Innocence and
Arrogance in Vietnam", published by Greenleaf Enterprises.
Mary was a nurse at the 24th in 1971.

My memories of That portion of my life are of Growing, learning and self
medicating. I made some close friends, built an admiration for a people that
spent their entire lifetime at war. When I returned to the US I became deeply
involved in the drug culture for a time Then went to college and finally joined
society again as a useful individual. Wow what an experience war is and I hope
future generations don't have to do it again.

Just wanted to say I was there and remember the Huey's landing and seeing you
folks at work. Was with a G2 Hq group up on the hill. Remember Loon Foon's, the
Chinese Resturant and all the red dust. The Monsoon rains where you could walk
out of your hooch and have to wade water knee deep to get to the mess hall and
the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Also remember the heat and the bugs and
all the other trivial things one tends to reflect on but most of all I remember
being there and all the wonderful men and women that were there with me.
May God Bless each and every one and "Thank You"
Welcome Home

I am looking for the helicopter Medvac group who worked with the Ninth
Infantry Divison during June 3, 1969. Our company during a firefight loss three
buddies, two wounded and one KIA initially. As an RTO, I called for the Med Vac.
During the loading of our KIA and wounded in a hot LZ, the helicopter pilot
lifted and banked to a hard right. His medic wearing a white helmet with a red
cross fell from the copter and landed in the ground. He stood up and we could
tell that he did not know where to run to. Myself and another grunt, ran out and
picked him up and threw down in the area were our squad had been down in. I
called the med vac and informed him that he had left his medic. If anyone
remembers this incident, I just wanted to know the medic's and pilots name, or
the groups' number just say hi.

I was at the 67th Evac in QuiNhon, 8/70-8/71. I had friends at the 24th Evac,
and we all shared the good times and the bad. I'm now retired, and although I
can't remember many names, I can still see their faces. Best wishes to all the
staff who served the 24th Evac.

I just discovered this site! Many thanks for doing it. Last week we had our
5th Reunion of the 12th Evac in San Antonio, TX, which some eighty plus members
and their spouses and guests attended.
We visited Ft. Sam the new Medical Center Hospital and the new AMEDDS Museum.
That was a real treat, particularly the section devoted to Viet Nam. To one and
all, sad to say The Pit is no longer, and the Quadrangle is now a parking lot.
Would it be possible to link to your site?
I would also like to invite members of the 24th Evac to join in an effort to
build a Medical Clinic in Memory of Lt. Sharon Lane, USANC who was stationed at
312th Evac, and who was killed during a mortar attack on her Vietnamese Ward
June 8, 1969.
The Lane family has given permission and the Clinic will be sponsored by
Viet/Aid, which has built the Floyd Olsen Clinic in Hong Ha, near Hue city, and
several kindergardens, dedicated to fallen American soldiers. They sponsor
multiple Hospitals in Hue as well.
Diane Carlson Evans is supporting this effort. Senator John McCain has agreed to
help among others.
The book Hostile Fire, written by Philip Bigler, a biography about Sharon is an
excellent read about her short tour, less than two months in country. It is
available through us, and if interested please contact me as the publisher
will make a contribution to the Clinic building fund.
We will be returning to Chu Lai in March 2001 to Chu Lai, and hope to break
ground at that time.
It is my hope that those of you who wish to return to Viet Nam will participate
in the work of this Clinic once it is constructed, by practicing Medicine and
Nursing and teaching there.
We welcome talents of all kinds, not only Medical. Come join us in giving Honor
to an American Military Nurse who served her Country and also Viet Nam, and with
the establishment of this Clinic will continue to serve the Vietnamese people
of Chu Lai, as she did so long ago.
We will be visiting Mrs. Kay Lane, Sharon's Mom next week.
May I ask your permission to extend to her and her family during these difficult
Holiday weeks your prayers and Best Wishes?
God Bless each and every one of you, and peace to you and your families.
Welcome Home!

I was severely wounded on 13 April, 1967 and was dead on the prep table at
Dau Teang (spelling ?). The Nurse or Doctor argued with the two or three men in
the room and cut me down. The others didn't want to waste the blood. They saved
me and dustoff transported me to the 24th. They tried some vascular sugery (vein
graft)but it failed and my arm was amputated at the 11th in Siagon. I received
wonderful treatment at the 24th but I don't remember much except that there was
a big hall and it was US on one side and VN on the other side (as I remember). I
would do anything to find that lady that argued to wast the blood on me because
even though I was "dead" I remember every word that went on in that
little field evac place that I went to before the 24th. I have pictures and the
story on my URL www.manana.com/vietnam.htm. If anyone can help me find that lady
please contact me at captmike@manana.com

I was at the 24th Evac from: 7/68 to 11/69
Association: MOS of Corpsman, but worked as the mailman and gofer
Had contact with most of the personnel who worked at the 24th, my only
contact with patients was when
it was really busy, medcap patrols, or any othe "go for" stuff. Made
lots of trips off the hospital grounds.
Have worked in public service all my life.....nearing the finish of a great
career with LA County Fire Department.
Would enjoy hearing from anyone....
